An exhibition showing the work of calligrapher Chang Bing-huang and seven other artists is underway through March 14 at the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo, highlighting the government’s dedication to enhancing the global visibility of domestic creators.

The display was coordinated by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan and New Taipei City-based Tamkang University, the Ministry of Culture said.

A total of 54 pieces are being displayed, including examples of traditional calligraphy as well as those created by e-pens. The devices are a collaboration between Chang and Tamkang University that incorporate artificial intelligence technology into the traditional art of writing with a brush, the MOC said.

Speaking at the show’s launch Feb. 13 in Tokyo, TECRO Representative Lee Yi-yang noted that Chang has shown a deep commitment to the promotion and teaching of calligraphy, cultivating numerous talented people in the field.

Chang said that the traditional methods of calligraphy have limits, and explained that he has been working with Tamkang to devise modern developments for 24 years. He demonstrated the e-pen’s functions with assistance from Lee and Rokuta Shimono, a councilor of the National Diet of Japan.

Chang is set to lead a seminar at the end of the month in which he will expound on the evolution of calligraphy and offer demonstrations of e-pens, the MOC said. (POC-E)
